Day 23. Ah-ah do the maca-rena

day 23

Remember that really annoying song from the late eighties? It’s so catchy that it’s still in my head! I was thinking about maca and then I started humming that old song. Funny how the mind works. It will probably take me another 20 years to get it out of my head again.

Thinking about what? About maca? What’s that, you say?

It’s another superfood. My friend told me about it last week. She said it balances out your hormones and when you’ve had enough to balance you out, then it makes you, er, can I say horny here? Let’s just say randy – that’s more PG rated. Well, that had my attention! (By the way, it takes time to balance out so please don’t eat too much of it in one go, you will just end up with a giant tummy ache!)

High in minerals, protein and amino acids, maca powder also contains unique alkaloids which balance the hormonal system. You only need 2 teaspoons twice a day to get the medicinal effects. It’s recommended you start small and increase as you need to, until you see results.

Grown in the Andean mountains in Peru, it was traditionally used to treat menopause, fertility, low energy, and low libido. It’s a bona (no pun intended) fide aphrodisiac! Thanks https://lovingearth.net/products/14/ for that info!

day 23 tahini and maca

Moving along. The other food I have re-discovered is tahini. Tahini is made from sesame seeds and it is a paste with the consistency of runny peanut butter. It has a great flavour and can be used in nut butters to make them taste and look more like peanut butter.

Tahini is so good for you – it’s rich in minerals such as phosphorus, lecithin, magnesium, potassium and iron. It’s a source of Methionine, which aids in liver detoxification. It’s high in protein, calcium, vitamin E and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and B15. Thanks http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-6997/10-Reasons-to-Eat-Tahini.html for that info!

Check out this great tahini “ranch” sauce recipe http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/2011/10/recipe-the-raw-tahini-dip-that-done-stoled-my-heart/

It also makes a great spread on it’s own. I used it here on buckwheat bread with grated carrot, beetroot and mushrooms.

day 23 tahini sandwich

Okay, I know you’re still thinking about the maca thing…

Maca has quite a unique taste with a slightly bitter caramel flavour. I have used it in smoothies and in this delicious, crumbly, nutty topping which you can add to your breakfast cereal, ice-cream or fruit.

Maca “get it on” crumble

1 cup mixed nuts

1 cup dates
1 vanilla pod
4 tsps maca powder
Blend in food processor, until nuts are chopped but not totally ground.
Sprinkle it on top of ice-cream, fruit or cereal.
Do NOT eat it all at once or I will not be held responsible for any ensuing randiness!
